SIXTH year pupils at a Ross-shire secondary have got the bottle to tackle an environmental menace right on their own doorsteps.

Members of the Dingwall Academy ASDAN group - taking part in a programme to develop life skills and environmental awareness - presented their first year counterparts with re-usable plastic bottles.

They've estimated that up to 400 plastic bottles are discarded during any given lunch hour at the secondary - and have resolved to do something about it. Depute rector Karen Cormack said the idea is to raise awareness as well as offer a practical solution to a significant issue.

She said the 180-strong first year at the school had proved receptive to a presentation made by their sixth year counterparts. Sixth years have also posted a clip to You Tube as part of the project.

The pupils have been supported by the Rowan waste awareness group.
