AN urgent appeal has gone out to Dingwall residents to donate cash or ribbons to help local pupils make hospital gowns for children undergoing operations in poverty-stricken countries.

The P7(1) class at Dingwall primary school has got behind this year's Blue Peter appeal by gathering 400 unwanted T-shirts which will be used as gowns for children undergoing cleft palate correction operations in 42 of the world's poorest countries.

The pupils have started converting the large pile of T-shirts into the surgical gowns, by cutting them up the back and lacing them together with ribbon.

Class teacher Lynn Jamieson told the Journal that each gown needs about a metre of ribbon and they are running out after working on about 150 T-shirts.

They have received small donations, and are now encouraging locals to donate money or ribbon as they estimate they need about £50 worth to complete the task. The teacher said the children have given a fantastic response to Blue Peter's "Send A Smile" appeal, which she believed was down to the fact that one boy in the class underwent a cleft palate operation.
