Sir – I have been involved in community work in the Invergordon area for longer than I care to remember and in all that time I have come across many pillars of the community, stalwarts, activists for a good cause and volunteers who give up their time for the good of others.

But there is one group of people who have delivered so much on a voluntary basis for others in their area and have gone relatively unsung.

So here in your letters page I want to give them the praise that they deserve. This group of people are the present Invergordon Community Council who comprise many individuals, all contributing to the common aim of producing good works for the area they serve.

To mention but a few there is the chairman, Catherine Richmond, who spends her time juggling a family, her work as a midwife, the parent council at the local school and her community council work.

Jaki Gardner has worked on many projects, including the Anderson Centre, which is the new after-school club on Albany Road, the lunch club for the elderly at the social club, South Lodge Primary School's murals, the playpark at Bellfield and the skate park at the former tennis courts. Margaret and Murdo MacPherson never tire and work endlessly on the Natal Garden, the museum and other community council projects. Every year Jaki and other community councillors assist me in organising the flowers for the High Street and watering the planters from June until October.

They also all help to prepare the Christmas lights for the town, along with fellow community councillors: Benny MacKay, Edwin Skinner, Ro Goodwin, Margaret Ross, Marion MacKay and John Auchterlonie.

Community councils are not just talking shops but work on behalf of the local community.

In so doing they are able to forward the views of those they meet every day of their lives to the politicians and the local council; they lobby for causes and they do a great deal of voluntary work on an individual basis that goes unseen by the majority of the population.

I thank you for allowing me to give praise where praise is due and say to Invergordon Community Council — keep up the good work guys (and gals).

Cllr Maxine Smith, Cromarty Firth, ward councillor.
