A ROSS-shire couple are hoping to revive an ancient pastime — and to remove its snobbish image while they're at it!

Sally and Stephen Dovey, who moved to Strathpeffer from Sussex a year ago, came up with the idea of starting an informal group after discovering a suitable lawn on which to play the game next to the local bowling club and tennis courts beside the Pavilion.

Mrs Dovey told the Ross-shire Journal, "I'm not very sporty but I like a game of croquet.

"It is a very strategic game. It has the image of being a bit of a snobby game and for the elderly but it is a game which appeals to all ages. We just want to ran a friendly club.

"You wouldn't need to wear the proper clothes — it will be very informal. It will just be for fun and a good way to keep fit." She added, "We have our own croquet equipment as we used to play when we lived in Pulborough.

But I believe there is also a couple of sets at the pavilion."

The couple also run the recently formed Strathpeffer Strollers walking club.

Mrs Dovey said, "The area around Strathpeffer is ideal for walking but we are not keen on hiking over long distances. So we started our own club and have around eight members. We walk about one or two miles at a time."
