A ROSS-shire lass is preparing for lift-off after beating off competition from 3,000 counterparts for a place on a prestigious space programme.

Fortrose Academy pupil Rebecca Grigor will be joined by three other budding young Highland scientists as they prepare to blast off on a mission to the US space agency.

She is part of a group of 26 pupils expected to take off from Glasgow Airport today (Friday) with the Careers Scotland Space School.

When they touch down in Houston, Texas they will meet many of the astronauts, engineers and scientists who work for NASA.

Rebecca has been selected from 3,000 young people involved in the Careers Scotland programme which encourages students to follow careers in science, engineering and technology.

During the group's 10-day tour of NASA's Johnson Space Center, the sixth-year pupils will tour the historic mission control that was used during the Apollo space flights. They will also work with astronauts and scientists in a mixture of lectures, workshops, group tasks and assignments.
