MULL Theatre will be performing Accidental Death of an Accordionist in the Macphail next Thursday. It is a co-production with Rightlines, the company run by the play's writers, Euan Martin and Dave Smith.

Euan and Dave were the writers of Whisky Kisses, which was a very close second in the 2007 Highland Quest to find a musical for the Highlands. Euan, incidentally, is the brother of Kate Martin (of Kate Martin Waltz fame) who was the community education worker for Wester Ross in the 1980s.

Mull Theatre was founded in 1966 and has been touring ever since.

I remember them appearing in Ullapool village hall around 1970, playing to a packed house with people of all ages there.

Accidental Death of an Accordionist is a comedy drama set in the fictitious Highland village of Glengirnie at its grand fund raising ceilidh.

It was originally commissioned for the Highland Festival when it toured the Highlands to great acclaim. Ullapool is the only Ross-shire date on this major Scottish tour. Phone the Macphail Centre for tickets on 01854 613336.

THE fourth Blas festival has announced its programme for this year. Concerts being held locally are a ceilidh at The Ceilidh Place on September 5 with Skipinish, Fiona J Mackenzie and Feis Rois Trio; Chasing the Sun (this year's Blas commission) at Coigach community hall on September 9 with James Ross, Fraser Fifield and Mr McFall's Chamber Quartet; and Musical Masters in Ullapool village hall on September 13 featuring Edey, Power and Randall, Bruce Macgregor with Anna Massie and Christine Hanson, and Fèis Rois Ceilidh Trail. What a feast of music for Lochbroom and Coigach! Early Bird tickets (£2 off the adult price) are available until July 31 for all these concerts.

SINCE my recent rant about First Scotrail and its service from Inverness to Edinburgh/Glasgow I've been approached by people with similar tales, such as the couple who had to stand all the way from Inverness to Perth – again only three coaches on the train.

There was also the train that was being diverted but the person buying a ticket just half an hour before the train departed was not told about it.

I wrote to the Scottish Parliament minister responsible for transport two weeks ago; I await his reply with interest!
