AS I write this notebook the main item on the news is the revelation that Liberal Democrat Chief Treasury Secretary, David Laws, has claimed £40,000 for renting a bedroom from his partner, James Lundie, despite the fact that, since 2006, parliamentary rules have banned MPs from leasing accommodation from a partner.

WHEN I first moved to work in Inverness over 35 years ago, I lived on the Black Isle. It was a novelty to commute into Inverness by ferry across the Kessock narrows — the novelty soon wore off!
As the queues grew, so the clamour for a bridge gained strength and one was duly built.
That bridge has made a huge difference with greater convenience, reduced journey times and the opening up of the Black Isle and East Ross as significant commuter territory to a burgeoning Inverness. No more ferry queues, or that long haul round by Beauly if you missed the last ferry.

SEVERAL weeks ago, when my party leader Nicol Stephen walked into my (beautiful; more of that anon) Holyrood office one evening and offered me the convenership of the Scottish Parliament's Subordinate Legislation Committee, I was surprised. Nay, I was astonished.

ONE photograph in a recent edition of the Ross-shire has caught my eye. It was the photo of Tain Royal Academy taken 33 years ago on a school trip which showed pupils clearly enjoying themselves. It took me back to my own school days and a recent re-acquaintance with school pals.

IT has been a busy time where fish are concerned, with two days spent at a discussion on rebuilding cod stocks, my report on funding for Regional Advisory Councils going through committee, an interview with someone doing research on them, the Commission announcing its plans to stop fish being discarded and a meeting about maritime policy more generally.
