Cabers on a loser at Lochcarron

OLD rivals Newtonmore and Kingussie have qualified for the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup final.

Newtonmore defeated Inveraray 5-2 after extra-time to qualify for their first final in several years. Kingussie were 6-0 winners over Kilmallie.

In the Scottish Hydro Premier Division, Lovat defeated Oban Camanachd by one goal to nil at Kiltarlity. Newtonmore and Glengarry are to meet in the Strathdearn Cup final.

On Saturday, Newtonmore defeated Fort William 3-2 in their semifinal tie; and Glengarry accounted for Glenurquhart by ten goals to one.

In the Marine Harvest North Division One League at Castle Leod, Caberfeidh came a cropper against a more purposeful Lochcarron, showing something of their past form.

Caberfeidh were not at full strength and fielded defender Brian Macdonald in goal, as did Lochcarron whose custodian was Kenny Ross, usually an outfield player.

Both excelled themselves in their unusual roles, producing several spectacular and amazing saves as they endeavoured to keep the score down.

Time after time, one or the other would sweep a goal-bound shot away with his hand or the caman.

However, Lochcarron won by three goals to one. Iain Mackenzie and Peter Mackenzie (2) were their marksmen, while Kevin Bartlett notched Cabers' consolation counter.

There were some exciting moments in the game, but the under-strength Cabers were struggling now and then against a superior team producing the better shinty.

Kinlochshiel continued their domination of the Division One league programme with another first class display for their 11th straight victory in eleven games, overpowering Strathglass by nine goals to nil. Lochaber are three points adrift of Shiel with 12 games played. In third place on the league table, Beauly have 16 points from 12 games. On Saturday they accounted for Inverness by two goals to nil, their scorers being David Maclean and Conor Ross

Earlier in the week, Lochaber defeated Inverness 5-3.
