Ross youngsters warned about solvent abuse dangers

Northern ConstabularyYOUNG people in Ross-shire are being warned about the dangers of solvent and aerosol abuse after a number of cases were reported to Northern Constabulary over the past few weeks.

Officers are aware of recent thefts of aerosol deodorant cans and have information that youngsters are inhaling these substances.

Now they want parents to be aware of the dangers as there is evidence that inhaling these substances can have serious medical implications for the user. Up to 10 young people die in Scotland each year as a result of solvent or lighter fuel abuse.

Police are also warning shop keepers to be more vigilant, given the recent thefts of aerosols.

A website, www.thelost.org.uk, offers people support and encouragement to kick the habit.

A phone number for The LOST (Lee O’Brien Solvent Trust), which was set up by the family of 16-year-old Lee O’Brien who died after inhaling lighter fuel, is also available on 07910483525.
