The environmental benefits of hybrid cars

THE world is fast waking up to the threat that consistent use of fossil fuels poses to the environment.

Global warming and related environmental damage are problems that are well documented in the media. One quite effective and positive solution is that of hybrid cars, which are now produced commercially.

The concept of a hybrid car is one of the first initiatives taken by the world to counter the effects of pollution and global warming. Although there are different technologies for making a hybrid car, the most common is supplementing the normal petrol engine with an electric motor. Hybrid cars with this technology are known as Hybrid Electric Vehicles.

The electric motor in hybrid vehicles reduces the pressure on the petrol engine which results in less usage of the traditional engine.  This then results in commensurately less financial pressure on the owner of the hybrid car.

The demand for Hybrid Electric Vehicles has been increasing significantly from all sectors of the automobile market primarily because of the multiple benefits that these vehicles provide. The demand for these vehicles has reached such a level that the majority of cars from bigger manufacturers have a hybrid rendition to their normal models. For example, Honda, which is widely regarded as one of the forerunners of the automobile technology, has a hybrid version for its leader of 4x4 cars, the CRV.

The foremost benefit of a hybrid car is the fact that it can reduce the consumption of fossil fuels significantly. As is widely documented in the media, the emissions from a normal internal combustion engine are harmful for the environment. The cumulative effect of emissions from multiple cars has simply been global warming and the deterioration of the ozone layer. As a consequence, greater use of hybrid cars UK means that there is lower emission of harmful gases, which means, in turn, that there would be less pollution and damage to the environment.

Moreover, this is a major boost to the economy of a country, and indeed the world, reeling from the volatile prices and the resultant pressures that fossil fuels create. Even more important than the support to the country's economy is the financial benefit accrued to the individual who owns the hybrid car. For example, the owner of the hybrid car would primarily save a significant amount of money due to an improved fuel efficiency of his car. He would save money because the improved fuel efficiency would lead to him requiring less fuel. Also, the owner of the car would not have an increased utilities bill because the electric motor of a hybrid car like a Honda CRV does not need to be plugged in to be charged. Instead, the electric motor is charged by the internal combustion engine itself.

Furthermore, people who own hybrid cars get tax benefits as well. An owner of a hybrid CRV in the United Kingdom would only have to pay a vehicle excise duty of 15 pounds per annum as against the vehicle excise duty that a person with a normal car would pay. Tax related benefits for people who own hybrid cars grow in size and significance especially if the usage of the car is commercial. In other words, companies and organisations with hybrid cars get even more tax concessions from the government for both leasing and purchasing the cars.

There may be some detractors who would suggest that the technology in hybrid cars is still unreliable. However, these people would be wrong. Even though a few years ago the technology for hybrid cars was experimental, it has since become very reliable and has been proven time and time again in real world situations. Honda has even revealed that it has sold off at least 500,000 hybrid vehicles throughout the world. This shows that the technology for hybrid cars has already been cracked and is very much commercially viable.

In fact, many hybrid car manufacturers even provide very substantial warrantees for the technology. Some hybrid manufacturers provide a warrantee of five years; others provide it for eight years. Also, the technology has been truly implemented which means that all authorised dealers of the hybrid car manufacturers would know how to service the vehicles properly.

There are numerous advantages of owning a hybrid car for any person ranging from the extremely important environmental benefits to the equally significant financial benefits.
