TONIGHT (Friday) is Bonfire Night in Ullapool. As usual the bonfire and fireworks will be at the disc golf course below West Terrace. The bonfire will be lit at 6pm and the fireworks are at 6.45pm. Refreshments will be on sale from 5.45pm up on West Terrace. Isle Martin Trust will be serving cups of lentil soup, burgers (proper butcher beef ones from Food for Thought as well as veggie burgers made for us by The Ceilidh Place) and hot dogs. They will also have a stall selling "sweet things" such as individual cakes, toffee apples and other treats. So don't have your tea before you go - have your three courses there. Donations of baking for the "sweet things" stall will be most welcome.
The bonfire and fireworks is a community event - the fund for this year's was started with a generous donation from Loopallu.
Businesses or individuals can donate to the fund by giving a cheque made out to Ullapool Fire and Light Fund to the treasurer Angie Ford; you can also hand it in to the laundry.
There will be a collection taken tonight at the bonfire/fireworks. To ensure the continuation of this event please give generously!
TOMORROW (Saturday) Ullapool Fairtrade Group is inviting people to help them celebrate their five years of Fairtrade status. Between 3pm and 4pm go along to the village hall to try Fairtrade tea and coffee and have a slice of Fairtrade cake. Mmm...
ULLAPOOL based composer James Douglas will be launching a new CD called Land of the Lochans and a CD launch party will be held next Tuesday (8th) in the Macphail Centre between 7.30pm and 9pm. If you would like to be there call 01854 612236 or email: caritas@caritas-music.co.uk
YOU may have heard about the new Apple iPhone that doesn't recognise Scottish accents. Well, I have the previous iPhone and have a useful (?) app called Around Me that picks up your location and can then tell you the hotels, cafés, petrol stations, pharmacies etc near you. In an idle moment at home I looked to see what came up for Ullapool. Right enough, there were local bars, cafes and petrol station - but then it seems to take a crazy turn for things that we don't have here. It seems my nearest hospital is John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore USA - 3,320 miles from Ullapool, my nearest theatre is the Performing Arts Centre in Providence, Rhode Island, USA and my nearest car parks are in Philadelphia - yes, USA again!
